Field Update: World No. 8 Matt Fitzpatrick, World No. 11 Viktor Hovland Latest Top-Ranked Players in the Field
Currently Nine of the Top 15 Coming to Charlotte
Charlotte, NC, April 20, 2023— Two more highly ranked players committed to compete in the Wells Fargo Championship as the PGA TOUR returns to Charlotte and Quail Hollow Club, May 1-7.
England’s Matt Fitzpatrick and Norway’s Viktor Hovland will both be making their second appearance in the Wells Fargo Championship. Fitzpatrick, who will be playing in Charlotte for the first time, was tied for second last year when the tournament was held in Potomac, MD. Hovland, in his only appearance at Quail Hollow Club, was tied for third in 2021.
Fitzpatrick has been on a nice run as of late, finishing T10 at the Masters Tournament and winning the RBC Heritage on Sunday. After holding a one-shot lead through 54 holes at Harbour Town, he defeated Jordan Spieth in a playoff with a birdie on the third extra hole.
Hovland also was among the top ten in Augusta a few weeks ago with a T7 finish. He has accumulated five top-10s this season.
Here are the top-15 players in the world currently scheduled to compete: Rory McIlroy (No. 3), Patrick Cantlay (No. 4), Xander Schauffele (No. 5), Max Homa (No. 7), Fitzpatrick (No. 8), Hovland (No. 11), Sam Burns (No. 12), Justin Thomas (No. 14), Cameron Young (No. 15).
Players have until 5:00 p.m. Eastern on April 29 to commit to the 156-player field and can withdraw from the tournament at any time.
